Approach Procedural Rating – ICAO 053
Procedural controlling is a highly specialised field in air traffic control, whereby air traffic controllers provide a separation service without the use of radar. Students are well practiced and well versed in the various techniques used in order to provide safe, orderly and expeditious flow of traffic in this environment.

Requirements:
- Valid ATSA rating (link to ATSA course)
- Valid Aerodrome Control Rating License
- Age: Minimum 21 years
- Matric with mathematics and English, geography and advantage
- Class 3 medical
- Achieve Level 4 in Aviation English proficiency test
The course comprises of lectures with theoretical assessments, as well as practical simulations and assessments.
The approach control course consists of the following theoretical modules:
- General ATC procedures
- Approach control
- Separation standards
- Meteorology
Practical Simulator Training
In order to develop the practical controlling skills of the candidate to the required standard, he/she will be required to apply the following procedures and principles in a simulated operational environment:
- Radio telephony procedures
- Approach control procedures
- Separation standards
- Emergency procedures
- Emergency progress strip marking
All lectures and assessments follow the SACAA approved curriculum. All instruction is in English.
